ChartFactory is a free, open source Java API (license info) for generating charts that can be saved as files or embedded in web or desktop applications. Unlike other API's, ChartFactory is lightweight and extremely easy to use. Features offered by ChartFactory include:

bar charts with one or more series
line charts
pie charts
complete control of chart colors, transparency, fonts, and embedded layers
direct access to the Image object for embedding charts in other applications
ability to export as a PNG or JPEG image
simple, easy-to-use interface
complete source code, under the terms of the GNU General Public License
thorough documentation, guides, samples, and example code

You can take a look at example charts and the code that produces them on the samples page. These are actually generated by the TestChartFactory unit test that is included in the source code.
